RE: Northwest wine country

We just returned from a two month trip to Idaho, Washington and Oregon and one main reason for the trip was visiting local wineries. One can't go wrong with spending a month rambling around Washington and Oregon sampling then picking up some nice wines. Start at Leavenworth then south to Prosser then into Oregon through the gorge area to just south or Portland. The myth of Napa valley quality is quickly fading as far as I'm concerned. If I want good wine from California, I visit Paso Robles and get great wine at half the price the Napa wineries charge.

RE: road information

"This time of year" is pretty broad. Durango mountain ski resort will hopefully be opening in a little over a month and it sits a lot lower than Silverton or any points north on Hwy 550. All it takes is one storm to mess up your trip. The main reason most folks shy away from this stretch of road is the narrow hairpin curves, and there are lots of them especially around Chattanooga and Guston. I'm not saying you can't make it because you can. Just hope you don't meet another RV heading north while you're heading south on one of the curves because you have the outside lane where there are no guardrails and pretty steep drop offs. I would wager that 9 out of 10 people taking a large rv over that stretch would never do it again. But there is always that one who will try to convince everyone into thinking it's not bad at all. If you have a chance, unhook the toad and drive from Montrose to Silverton to see for yourself. From Silverton to Durango is a piece of cake... unless they get 7" of snow!

RE: Sales down in Aug 07 and now again in 08 but much bigger

So, what's the point to this post other than to yell... "the sky is falling"? Are there people living under rocks that perhaps don't know about the bad economic conditions?

RE: Tired of oil leaks in my 03 Duramax 1 ton

I have had the dealer repair three times an oil leak in the lower oil pan. Now they tell me I have an oil leak in the upper oil pan and will need to disconnect the transmission to get to it to the tune of around $1200. 60 K miles. When does this nonsense end?I think I would find another dealer!

RE: does everyone want an Airstream?

Well, I just don't understand all the hype. While waiting on my fiver being serviced on a recent trip I had a few hours to mill around the dealership, that just happened to carry the Airstream trailers. I popped in and out of several they had on the lot and wasn't impressed with one thing about them. They may have been the trailer of the day several years ago but if one were to compare the interior "fit and finish" of the new trailers, it would be clear that they are relying on the name, not current quality.

RE: Weber We Have A Problem!

Visit Webers website. This is a common problem and they have answers for this and many other little problems. Mine wouldn't get hotter than 250 degrees, now I get to 500 degrees within a few minutes.

RE: 2008 Duramax ride

My 08 dually rides a great deal better than my 03 SRW did. Maybe because of the 17" wheels? Also max pressure recommended is 60 rear, 66 front on the 08 vs. 80 all around on the 03. Interestingly the door sticker says keep the spare at 80 --- what's up wid dat? I know this thread isn't about tire pressures but does corelate to ride comfort and since several have mentioned different pressures I thought I'd chime in again. To begin with there is a lot of difference between Max pressure and Cold pressure, I'm assuming cold pressure was meant above. I use the Pressure Pro tire monitoring system and tire pressures can easily grow 5 - 8 psi while driving down the road especially when towing on a hot day, a fact I never realized until installing the Pressure Pro and actually watching the pressures change. Also, I don't understand putting only 60psi in the rear. Say you need to run down to the lumber yard and pick up a load. WIth only 60 psi in the rear you will be underflated very quickly per tire manufacturer pressure ratings. No big deal but we do have these trucks for their carrying capacity right? On my '06 dually I run 60 psi cold front and 75 psi cold rear all the time and do not notice any harshness in ride comfort or tire wear as apposed to 60 psi all around. It just saves me from airing up the rear duals when I get ready to tow. Many look at the door sticker for pressure recommendations but keep in mind these are not for towing under a load.

RE: RV sales down..... Local story news

... He went on to say that people with over 700 credit scores are getting turned down, if their debt to income ratio was too high, I think this my be one of the reasons for the slow sales.... Ah yes, the magical credit score, what a mess that monster has created! The more in debt a person becomes, the more eligable they are for yet another loan for more toys they can't afford! Looks like we might get back to the good ole days where we were taught not to spend money we didn't have! Of course a lot of young families might have to go without that new motorhome, jeep, boat and motorcycles for each child... untill they can actually afford them!

RE: 2008 Duramax ride

... I know having a fifth hitched up will help but could not imagine having a 3500 running solo. Don't count on the ride getting better hitched up. Before we installed an air hitch my wife was about ready to throw the towel in due to the lousy bumpy ride. Driving a 3500 around isn't as bad as you think. I drive mine all the time and I actually think it's smoother than our 2500 4x4 Duramax we had before. We added Firestone air bags and the ride smoothed out even more, something you might want to look into, it was well worth the few hundred they cost. ...The computer read 21.5 MPG Hope you don't get to attached with that number 'cause you certainly won't be seeing it much.:B I'm on my third Duramax in six years and have seen 20+mpg only once, for about 50 miles on I-20 and that was when they still showed "instant mileage". I can say that with 42,000 miles on our 2006, we're starting to see better towing miles recently. From averaging 10.2mpg before to now 11.8mpg with the same trailer. You won't believe the power though, these trucks pull like a freight train.

RE: RV sales down..... Local story news

“Gas prices are not impacting sales for RVs as much as the credit crunch,” said Melanie Atkinson, of RV Expo byDesign. That may well be true because most first time buyers probably have no clue what it feels like to get 8-12 mpg driving or pulling a rig and what a $450 fill up that takes 5 credit card swipes at $75 each really feels like. The rest of the comments are just garbage meant to get buyers into the show!

RE: Full time with 4 children?

agkcpa that was a wonderful post with real world examples. It is nothing like having lessons about the Grand Canyon sitting on the rim it would seem. For some odd reason, the following comment from the original post does not conjure up images of the family doing much sight seeing! "we would be traveling florida doing craft shows/flea markets" I think all of the comments so far have been fair. I think way too many folks on the forum glamorize the "Full Timing" lifestyle and far too many set out thinking life will be grand without seriously considering how harsh things can be, a few of which have been mentioned above. In my travels I’ve seen so many families living out of small trailers in the “long term” areas of rv parks and know many of them didn’t think it would end up this way. I don’t know if telling a young family of six to hit the road in a small trailer and enjoy life is really great advice or not.

RE: Full time with 4 children?

Although we don't full time or travel with four children, we do travel a lot, often for months at a time so know what it's like wagging around all your stuff. Something I think you need to take a closer look at is the size of the trailer. Good grief, for a family of six, this trailer is going to get cramped really quick and it has very little storage, perhaps enough for a few changes of clothes for the kids on a weekend trip! On a rainy day or two... or three in a row, everyone crammed between the dinnette and sofa is going to get awfully crowded. I would have a serious look at a larger trailer at the very least, something with some real storage space.

New tire search, looking for opinions

Well, I just put 45,000 miles on the set of Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's and am looking at replacement tires. These will go on my 3500 crew cab Duramax diesel dually truck used for towing my fifth wheel. I won't go back with the same tires as I think they should have given me more than 45,000 miles of use. So far I'm really impressed with the Michelin XP Rib and they seem to be one stout tire. The sidewall thickness on these tires is a lot thicker than most other tires I looked and this is important to me since a thorn through the sidewall of one of my Bridgestones is what started this whole replacement search to begin with. The XP ribs are a lot more espensive than some of the other load range E tires I have looked at so I'm a bit hesitant. I am looking for opinions from those folks who have these particular tires on their trucks, hopefully with a few miles on them, and if they are satisfied or not. Thanks

RE: Never deal with THOR credit

What next....... should Thor just give him a call and forgive his note entirely? Would that make some of you happy? Well, IF this story is true and IF the FACTS are as presented (I suspect we are hearing a slightly slanted, exaggerated view), it wouldn't help him because this character would probably go out and buy a boat he couldn't afford then be back here in a year blaming the seller for demanding his late boat payments (assuming of course, the markets are still his problem)! :B I guess since my rig is paid for and I take responsibility for all of my financial actions without asking for bail outs or forgiveness when I screw up, I'm considered one of the self righteous wankers right? Well, that's OK, at least I sleep well at night not worrying over which overdue bill to pay next! ;)

RE: squeaky slide

I don't know about the noise experienced by others but my noise obviously was from the nare metal on metal contact which was causing binding and on a thousand pound slide, lots of things started popping and creaking. It amazed me how much quieter it got by simply spraying the teeth on the lower slide arms.

RE: Never deal with THOR credit

....However, I do find it interesting that the OP created their account yesterday, dropped this one "canon fodder" post and has not returned. Much ado about what? This place still amazes me! After reading through the responses so far I also see that the original poster has failed to rejoin the discussion. A total stranger (or a member using a new fake name) joins the forum to post some inflammatory nonsense then sits back and watches the forum members have at each other. It's one thing to disagree and it looks like opinions are scattered but some are so ready to resort to such childish behavior like name calling.... and over what? That's what amazes me most.

RE: Never deal with THOR credit

Give me a break. You're blaming them because you were late with a payment, no wonder this country is in such a mess. They actually called you and wanted the money you owed them, the nerve of those people. Sam Sam, You took the words right out of my mouth! The nerve indeed, what's the world coming to when people expect the money they are due! .... I am also completely open to a complete and honest discussion with THOR in relation to their practices. Clints30, I don’t understand this at all. You start out bashing a company for trying to collect money you owe them when you are late, not once but “a few” times then say you are open to a discussion about their practices! What practices? The practice of asking that you live up to the agreement you signed up to? The practice of trying to collect money owed them? I’ve been away from this forum for a while but in the “good ole days” a moderator would have cut this thread before it had a chance to grow since it’s just pointless bashing.

RE: squeaky slide

My fiver is two years old and like many, I was instructed NOT to apply any lubricant to the slide gear teeth because of the all too familiar excuse of them collecting dirt. Well, back in July, two thousand miles from home, one of my slides finally refused to come in. It had been making noise for a while, getting jerkier and jerkier until it finally just stopped. Finally, after working with it for two hours, we took everything out of the slide including the tables and chairs, emptied the cabinets and it finally came in enough so we could limp into a repair shop. A visit to an RV dealership in Montanna and $200 later, I was on my way. What did they do? They lubricated the slides! That's it, nothing else, no re-alignment, nothing, just lubricated the slide and it started working like new again. To those who say never lube the slides, fine, that's your privelage but as for me, I now advocate lubricating the teeth in the slide and now the other slide works quieter and smoother as well. They make a slide lubricant which looks like thick WD-40 and it really works. And a plug for Double Tree...... When I called them from a park in the middle of nowhere frantic with a slide half out, I was dropped like a hot potatoe and told... "Sorry, your warranty has expired, you might want to contact Lippert hydraulics for advice or do whatever you want!" So much for customer support!
